The women's boat shoe: a nautical icon reinvented
Some shoes have the power to transport us instantly. Such is the case with the boat shoe, a perfect balance between the elegance of the loafer and the relaxed seaside spirit. At Zèta, we have reinterpreted this icon into a comfortable, durable, and recycled shoe.
An invention born for adventure
The story of the boat shoe began in 1935 on the slippery decks of sailing boats. Paul Sperry, a passionate sailor, took inspiration from his dog's paw pads to create the first non-slip sole. Very quickly, the shoe adopted its defining features, such as 360° lacing for complete support and a non-marking sole. Transitioning from the open sea to American university campuses in the 1960s, it became the universal symbol of effortless elegance.
Nautical heritage revisited by Zèta
At Zèta, we carry on this heritage with a sustainable vision. Our women's boat shoes retain the classic silhouette and apron stitching, but replace traditional leather with olive waste. Once the oil is extracted, the stones and skins are recovered, dried, and ground down to be transformed into a technical material called Oleatex.
They are designed in Bordeaux and handcrafted in Portugal, in a workshop with artisanal savoir-faire.
Comfort designed for walking
The real challenge with a women's boat shoe is to make it as flexible as a trainer. We engineered a structure that offers natural support from the very first steps. The lightweight, non-slip sole cushions every step and ensures perfect posture.
Quality is at the heart of our approach and each model is tested at the CTCP in Portugal, the Technological Centre for Footwear. We test lace resistance, sole flexibility, and colour fastness. Our vegan loafers are thus designed to accompany you through many summers!
How to wear your boat loafers this summer?
Today, the boat shoe has moved beyond the seaside to become an urban staple. For a "coastal chic" style, opt for wide-leg white linen trousers paired with an oversized shirt. If you prefer minimalism, go for straight-leg jeans cropped just above the ankle and a structured blazer. Finally, for a preppy touch, feel free to wear them with heavy canvas shorts and short white socks.
Your questions about our boat loafers
What are the trending shoes for this summer 2026?
For this summer 2026, sandals, mules, and boat loafers are the season's key statement pieces. Practical and casual, this summer loafer complements all your outfits!
Why does the lace go all the way around the shoe?
It is the technical heritage of the deck shoe. This 360° lacing system provides a perfect heel hold and allows you to adjust the fit all around the foot.
Can you wear them barefoot?
Absolutely, and that is indeed how sailors originally wore them. As our olive-based material is breathable, they are very comfortable against the skin even without socks. It is the ideal choice to let your feet breathe all summer long.
