For a long time, we believed that a good shoe should support the foot, cushion every step, and provide arch support. Barefoot takes a different approach: what if we simply gave the foot more freedom?
Barefoot shoes aim to recreate the sensation of walking barefoot, while still protecting the foot from the ground. Less constraint, more space, and greater sensations.
But concretely, what is a barefoot shoe? Why adopt them and how do you choose the right pair? We explain.
What is a barefoot shoe?
"Barefoot" literally means "bare feet" in English. The concept is therefore directly inspired by our natural way of walking.
A barefoot shoe, also known as a minimalist shoe, protects the foot from the ground while seeking to interfere as little as possible with its movements. To achieve this, its construction is based on several specific elements: a wide toe box, a zero drop, and a thin, flexible sole.
A wide toe box to give the toes room
Look at your feet when they are bare: your toes do not form a point.
Yet many shoes narrow at the front, forcing the toes together.
The toe box of a barefoot shoe is wider. It follows the natural shape of the foot more closely and allows the toes to move and splay during walking.
A zero drop to bring the foot closer to the ground
The drop refers to the height difference between the heel and the forefoot.
In a traditional shoe, the heel is generally slightly elevated. In a zero drop barefoot shoe, this difference disappears: the heel and the forefoot are placed at the same height.
The foot thus finds a position closer to what it would be barefoot.
A thin, flexible sole that follows the foot
A thick sole creates more distance between the foot and the ground. Barefoot shoes, on the contrary, seek to preserve these sensations through a thinner and more flexible sole. It bends with the foot, follows its movements, and allows you to better feel the different surfaces underfoot.
Why wear barefoot shoes?
Each foot contains 26 bones, 33 joints, and numerous muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Barefoot shoes seek to let this mechanics move with fewer constraints.
- More space for the toes — thanks to the wider toe box, the toes can move and splay more freely.
- More sensations thanks to a thin sole that brings the foot closer to the ground and allows you to better feel the different surfaces.
- More freedom of movement with a zero drop and a flexible sole that naturally follows the foot's movements.
- A different approach to comfort with less compression, more space, and greater flexibility.
How to choose your barefoot shoes?
✓ A wide toe box that gives the toes enough space to move and splay naturally
✓ A zero drop with 0 mm difference between the heel and the forefoot, to stay as close as possible to a natural position
✓ A supple and flexible sole that bends easily and follows the foot's movements while walking
✓ An appropriate thickness that offers the right balance between ground feel, protection, and comfort according to your habits
✓ A model suited to your use depending on whether you are looking for barefoot shoes for everyday wear, walking, or sport
✓ A gradual transition to give your feet time to adjust to these new sensations if you are new to barefoot
