RE:GROUND, the first sneakers in coffee by ZÈTA x NESPRESSO

RE:GROUND, la première basket en café by ZÈTA x NESPRESSO

Since the creation of Zèta in 2020, our goal has always been the same: to offer recycled, recyclable and vegan sneakers. We give a second life to materials such as grapes, corn or even plastic and in view of the multitude of waste that exists, we do not intend to stop there!

Today, Zèta is proud to present its very first collaboration with Nespresso to create RE:GROUND, a pair of coffee sneakers made from recycled and upcycled materials. Each pair of sneakers in this capsule collection contains recycled coffee grounds equivalent to 12 espressos.

Nespresso launched its recycling program in 1991, when the brand was taking off. They recycle not only aluminum but also coffee grounds, which allowed us to create RE:GROUND. The sneakers are made from 80% recycled and upcycled materials.

This capsule collection consists of 3 models with a caffeinated name: Latte, Cappuccino and Ristretto.

Their difference? It is the sole that fits perfectly with the name of the drink. A white sole for the Latte sneaker, a honey sole for the Cappuccino sneaker and a dark brown sole for the Ristretto sneaker make this collection a unique creation!

RE:GROUND is a limited collection available until June 10 exclusively on the Zèta website. The grain on the cake? The pair comes in an upcycled jute bag!

How was the project born?

In the beginning, it's above all a story of an encounter. Nespresso CEO Guillaume Le Cunff came across a Linkedin post from Laure, the founder of Zèta, and was intrigued by our approach. Indeed, 100% recycled, vegan and grape sneakers are not very common. Guillaume sent a message directly by launching a challenge: "Congratulations for the grape sneakers, but what about the coffee?"

After much research, it turned out that there is no coffee "leather" on the market. We finally met Tintex, a leader in the innovative textile market, who decided to embark on the adventure alongside us.

After several months of testing, research and development, Tintex has created a coffee material that can be used in the manufacture of sneakers.

How is coffee vegan leather made?

This coffee leatherette is an innovative and durable material that perfectly reflects circularity.

It has been made using environmentally friendly materials and materials, present both in the textile substrate (underlay), which is a 100% cotton fabric, and in the cover layer, which is made up about 20% green and biobased polymers, and about 65% water-based PU. To this is added 15% coffee grounds which come from the Nespresso capsule recycling program.

This coffee imitation leather has several sustainable aspects: incorporation of used coffee grounds, high content of biological substances, natural dyes and eco-responsible processing.

What is the coffee sneaker made of?

Zèta is committed to working in short circuits only with European suppliers close to our manufacturing workshop. RE:GROUND sneakers are therefore made in Portugal like all of our other models.

The composition of the RE:GROUND trainers remains faithful to the classic models with the choice of corn plant material for the outside of the trainer.

The inner lining is in mesh made from plastic bottles fished out of the Mediterranean, the laces are in recycled plastic, the removable insole is in recycled cork, the outsole in recycled synthetic rubber and finally, the glue is in recycled latex

What's new? Coffee grounds are inserted into the insole and outsole and all the brown details of the shoe are made with this new material in coffee. The soles have a speckled effect that comes from particles of recycled rubber and coffee grounds.

An innovative and surprising collaboration

Zèta and Nespresso share the same commitments to environmental and social responsibility.

Nespresso has a deep and longstanding commitment to sustainability, and circularity is a key part of this.

The company launched its capsule recycling program in 1991 and regularly runs campaigns to promote recycling to consumers. Nespresso has also supported many circular start-ups.

We innovate on the material side. Our DNA remains unchanged: Still as transparent, tStill as comfortable and tStill as ecological.
